At least seven people were killed when a minibus fell into Turag river after colliding with a bus in Ashulia on the outskirts of the capital Tuesday morning.
Twenty people from both the vehicles were also injured in the incident.
Five of the deceased were identified as Ali Hossain, Robiullah, Dr Fazlur Rahman, Sarwar Morshed and Abdur Rahman Babu, helper of the minibus.
The accident occurred when a Nabinagar bound 23-seated human hauler of Sayem Paribahan from Abdullahpur collided head-on with a bus near Ashulia bridge around 9:05am, said SM Badrul Alam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Ashulia Police Station.
Following the collision, the minibus tilted and plunged into Turag river, the OC said.
The vehicle which was carrying 10 to 12 extra passengers plunged into the river, just a few seconds after the bus hit it, said Mashiur Rahman, 33, an injured passenger of the minibus, who was on the way to his office at Nabinagar.
On information, divers from Fire Service and Civil Defence rushed to the spot and started rescue operation around 10:30am.
Later at around 1:50pm the rescuer team managed to explore the vehicle, which plunged nearly 30-feet into the river, with help of a crane, a diver said.
Most of the passengers of the bus were injured as the vehicle struck the road divider after hitting the human hauler, passengers of the bus said.
The injured were given primary treatment at East West Medical College and Hospital in Turag thana.
Divers along with the locals continued their search for the missing passengers.
