5 Savar cops charged over trader's death

Savar police on Monday pressed charges against five policemen for their alleged involvement with the killing of businessman Shamim Sarkar. Shamim, a 30-year-old land broker, was tortured after plain-clothes police picked him up along with his nephew Sohel, 28, at Hemayetpur on June 6. He was rushed to Mitford Hospital in Old Dhaka where he died later. The accused — Sub-Inspector (SI) of Ashulia Police Station Emdadul Haque Khan, Assistant Sub-Inspector Akidul Islam of Savar Police Station and its constables Mofajjal Hossain, Ramjan Ali and Yousuf Mia — are now in police custody. Aminur Rahman, officer-in-charge (Investigation) of Savar Police Station and also the investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet to the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate in Dhaka. The court later set September 5 for hearing on acceptance of the charge sheet.
