2 'robbers' killed in Sundarbans 'gunfight'

Two suspected robbers were killed in a gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in Chadpai range of eastern Sundarbans in Bagerhat Wednesday afternoon. Rab men also seized seven firearms, nine rounds of bullets from the spot, reports our Bagerhat correspondent. The deceased are -- Riaz alias Dalim, 27, and Kalam Shekh, 42, -- Lieutenant Sarfaraz Obaid, operation officer of Rab-8, told The Daily Star over cell phone quoting local people. On secret information that the 'Raju Bahini' and Rezaul alias 'Shirsha Bahini' have gathered near Andharmanik Forest Camp, the Rab men conducted drive in the area around 1:45pm, the Rab official said. Sensing their presence, the robbers of 'Shirsha Bahini' opened fire on the law enforcers, forcing them to fire back, Sarfaraz said. As the robbers retreated after a 25-minute gunfight, the elite force members recovered a shotgun, two single-barrel rifles, four LGs, nine rounds of bullets, 21 rounds of empty bullet shells and a boat from the spot, he added. The bodies will be handed over to the Mongla Police Station in Khulna, the Rab official said.
