4 to die for murder

A court here yesterday sentenced four people to death for killing grocer Sultan Mir in the town in 2007. Those to die for murder are Rakib, son of Rafiq Miah, Kanchan, son of Nazrul Kasher, Bhutto and Tamjid, sons of late Abdus Sobhan of Goailkandi Mirbari area in the town. The court also awarded one-year rigorous imprisonment to Parul, Tasli and Mina Begum and fined them Tk one thousand each. Two others, Shahana and Shafiq, were acquitted of the charges. According to the proceedings of the case, Kanchan, Tamjid and Shahana bought some daily essentials from the shop of Sultan Mir in Goailkandi Mirbari area on 19 September, 2007 noon and gave Sultan a Tk 500 note. When Sultan, son of late Sohrab Mir, went to Swadeshi Bazar in Mymensingh town to buy goods for his shop on the same day, he found the Tk 500 note a forged one. On return, Sultan along with his mother Kulsum went to the house of Kanchan, Tamjid and Shahana at noon and wanted to return the note. An altercation erupted and supporters of Kanchan, Tamjid and Shahana attacked Sultan with lethal weapons. Later seriously injured Sultan died at Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital (MMCH).
