30 hurt, houses torched, looted as rival villagers clash

At least 30 people were injured in a clash between two rival groups over establishing supremacy at Nalbata village in Raipura upazila yesterday. Nine houses came under arson attack while looting and vandalism took place during the incident. Mahmudul Islam, officer in-charge at Raipura police station, said there was a longstanding feud between the UP member Gulzer Hossain and former member Ala Uddin Mian in the area. On Wednesday night, Gulzer Hossain sustained severe injuries when his opponent group attacked him following an altercation. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital. The following morning, when a rumour of Gulzer's death spread, his supporters attacked the houses of Ala Uddin Mian and his men. A violent clash took place between the two groups when Ala Uddin Mian and his supporters made a counter-attack. Khodeza Khatun, 60, Halima Khatun, 55, Selina Begum, 22, Maleka Begum, 45, Nazma Begum, 25, Enamul Haque, 22 and Sumon Mian, 20 were seriously injured among others. Some of them were admitted to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital while the rest were treated at private clinics to avoid arrest. Being informed, police reached the spot and arrested six people from the spot, said the OC. AKM Fazlul Karim Faruque, chairman of Amirganj union parishad, said besides cocktail blasts, chase and counter chase took place during the two-hour long clash. A tense situation was prevailing in the area following the incident although it was brought under control by the law enforcers, he said.
