Seven injured as Kurigram AL factions clash

At least seven people, including three journalists, were injured during a clash between two factions of district Awami League at triennial council of the party in the town yesterday. Police arrested one Shajahan Ali Shaju, organising secretary of Kurigram district unit AL, along with a machete from the meeting of the council. Police said the clash took place between the men of district AL president Amsa Amin and lawmaker Jafor Ali, general secretary of the unit, when the council meeting was going on at Shadhinatar Bijoya Stambho ground in College intersection area in the morning. Besides four others, BTV cameraman Najmul, NTV cameraman Suja and Independent TV cameraman Rabiul were injured while taking video footage of the programme, said Md Moynul Islam, officer in-charge of Kurigram Sadar police station. Of the injured, Chhatra League activists Anis, 28 and Shanto, 25, were admitted to Kurigram Sadar Hospital, he said. Earlier, MP Jafor who went to Kurigram Station Club, adjacent to the meeting spot, at the call of Shaju had come under attack. As the news spread, the men of Jafor caught Shaju from the spot and handed him over to police. They also recovered a lethal weapon from his possession, said party sources. Among others, Mahbubul Haque Hanif, joint secretary of the ruling party, addressed the meeting.
