Interns at Rangpur medical call off indefinite strike

Interns at Rangpur Medical College Hospital called off indefinite strike yesterday after the hospital director assured them of meeting their demands within the next 72 hours. Director Dr. Golam Mostafa told this correspondent that the interns at the hospital called off their strike after a fruitful talks with him. Meanwhile, the hospital returned to normalcy yesterday following the withdrawal of the strike. Dr. Sohel Rana, president of Intern Doctors Association (IDA) Rangpur Medical College unit, said a meeting was held between IDA and RMCH administration yesterday noon. At the meeting we discussed the 3-point demand of the interns, he said. “As the administration assured us of meeting our demands within the next 72 hours, we called off the indefinite strike,” he added. He, however, warned that in case the administration failed to meet their demands within the stipulated time, they would start fresh agitation. The 3-point demand includes immediate arrest of the culprits who stabbed Rezwanur Rahman Miraz, president of Chhatra League Rangpur Medical College (RMC) unit, a permanent police camp on the college campus, cancellation of internship of Dr. Ashfaqul Haque Khondkar Pulok, and permanent expulsion of students Rahat Al Rajib, Raisul Islam Nobin, Sonjib Kumar Shingha, Sohag Hossain, Imran Hossain and Shafi. Meanwhile, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), Rangpur Medical College unit continued the indefinite strike for the fourth day yesterday. The doctors at the hospital also continued their daily two-hour work abstention from 3:00pm, protesting attack on chamber of Dr. Nurunnabi Laizu, general secretary of Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad Rangpur district unit. Demanding arrest of the culprits within February 7, the doctors at Rangpur Medical College Hospital also stopped attending private clinics and chambers from Monday.
