Patients suffer as interns at Rangpur medical continue strike
Interns at Rangpur Medical College Hospital continued their indefinite strike for the fourth day yesterday, demanding immediate arrest of the culprits who stabbed Rezwanur Rahman Miraz, president of Chhatra League Rangpur Medical College unit on January 28.
On the same issue, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) at Rangpur Medical College unit also continued the indefinite strike for the third day yesterday.
Their other demands include a permanent police camp on the college campus, cancellation of internship of Ashfaqul Haque Khondkar Pulok and permanent expulsion of students Rahat Al Rajib, Raisul Islam Nobin, Sonjib Kumar Shingha, Sohag Hossain, Imran Hossain and Shafi.
The Interns Doctors' Association (IDA) and BCL yesterday formed a human chain that lasted for an hour from 11:00am.
At the human chain, they again gave a 24-hour ultimatum to the authorities concerned to arrest the offenders.
Meanwhile, hospital sources said that a baby died at the hospital for want of treatment yesterday.
Family members of the baby alleged that they tried to admit the baby at the hospital. But the doctors at the hospital refused and at one stage the baby died, they said.
A large number of patients were also forced to leave the hospital due to the strike, sources said.
Meanwhile, doctors at the hospital started a two-hour work abstention from 3:00pm yesterday, protesting attack on the chamber of Dr. Nurunnabi Laizu, general secretary of Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad, Rangpur district unit.
As the authorities concerned failed to arrest the culprits within the deadline, we started a two-hour work abstention, said a leader of the parishad.
