Amidst his life's unrelenting struggles, freedom fighter Prof Harunur Rashid always made himself available to the needs of the masses and placed the country's well-being before his own, said speakers at a memorial meeting yesterday. Rashid devoted himself to national struggles and was an important organiser at an Agartala guerrilla training centre during the 1971 Liberation War, they said. The memorial meeting on Rashid was organised by Harunur Rashid Smrity Sangsad in the capital's Moni Singh-Farhad Smrity Trust Bhaban. Born in 1951, Rashid died of cancer on December 19, 2012 at the age of 62. Always involved with the progressive movements of 1960s and 1970s, Rashid had many friends who are senior leftist leaders, veteran journalists and writers of today. Mahfuz Anam, editor and publisher of The Daily Star, said Rashid was a true patriot. “Back in those days (late 1960s) when he and I were both Chhatra Union activists, I tried to follow him for he was a better activist than me...Whenever I try to remember the greatest moments of my life I remember those days and am inevitably reminded of him,” he said. Terming him a great activist, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid, another friend of Rashid, said, “It is harder to become a great activist than a leader.” Communist Party of Bangladesh President Mujahidul Islam Selim, Awami League Presidium Member Nuh-ul-Alam Lenin, and Prothom Alo Associate Editor Abdul Qayyum Mukul also spoke at the programme.
