BCL locks college to stop transfer of principal

BCL activists and their supporters yesterday put class and office rooms of Barisal BM College under lock and key, protesting transfer of the 'principal of their choice'. The pro-principal activists locked the rooms and forced the general students to join their protests, witnesses said. They held demonstrations and blocked roads around the campus for more than two hours till 12:30pm, demanding withdrawal of the transfer order. They also damaged two buses of city service and chased many others on the road. Police deployed in the college area remained silent spectators witnesses said. College principal Dr Nani Gopal Das said that he joined the college as principal on 8 February, 2009 and was scheduled to go on leave preparatory to retirement this year. He said that it would be difficult for him now to work in another college as a teacher. He brushed aside the allegation of fueling student movement to halt his transfer order. Das was transferred to Khulna Government Brojo Lal College as the chairman of economics department on Wednesday. A faction of Chhatra League and their associate activists close to the principal, started agitation against the transfer order at night. BCC Mayor also sent a letter to ministry while the BCL activists submitted a memorandum to the prime minister in this regard.
