Construction of bldg on school playground triggers protest

People of Sadar upazila brought out a procession and formed a human chain in the town yesterday, protesting construction of a multi-storied building on the playground of a school in the upazila. The participants at the human chain alleged that Abdus Sattar, president of the managing committee of Joyra High School, was constructing the building, occupying the school's playground. They demanded Sattar's removal as president of the school managing committee and urgent steps to stop the construction work. They also threatened to go for a tougher programme if the demands were not met immediately. Among others, chairman of the upazila Ataur Rahman Ata, and member of the managing committee Delwar Hossain, took part in the programme. Contacted, Abdus Sattar said that he was constructing the building on a portion of land of the playground which he bought in 1996”. Headmaster Mahbuba Akter said that over 400 students of the school will be deprived of the opportunity to play due to the construction of the building.
