Police yesterday arrested five people in connection with the killing of Bipul, a ward councillor of Meherpur municipality. They identified one of the arrestees as Sahidul Islam Perisan, local activist of Jubo League. The identities of others were not disclosed for the sake of investigation, said additional superintendent of police Abdul Matin. However, no case was filed in connection with the killing till filling of this report at 7:20pm yesterday. Abdullah Al Mamun Bipul, councilor of Ward-8 and former general secretary of the district unit Jubo League, was shot dead by a gang of masked criminals near the house of Perisan in Kachripara area of the town on Monday night. Police were raiding different areas to arrest the killers of Bipul, a prime accused in the murder of another councilor of the municipality, said the ASP. Bipul was accused in the case for murder of councilor Mizanur Rahman Ripon, who was killed in a bomb attack on April 11, 2010. Meanwhile, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Meherpur district unit yesterday gave a 24-hour ultimatum to the administration, demanding immediate arrest of the killers. The activists were holding a procession, led by Safuan Ahmed Rupok, president of district unit BCL.
