Two youths yesterday slaughtered the bullet-hit madan tak beside Fun City, an amusement park in Pirganj upazila under Thakurgaon district. The rarely seen species of bird was undergoing treatment at the park after its capture by locals at Jhaljhali village in the upazila on January 15. "As the bird seemed too sick on Saturday afternoon, the manager of Fun City unfastened it to allow its free movement in the park. The bird went to a pond adjacent to the park this morning where two youths named Asad and Sultan caught and slaughtered it," Rezwanul Haque, director of Fun City, told this correspondent over cell phone yesterday. On information, police detained Md Asad, 36, of Roghunathpur village and Sultan, 35, of Guagaon village under Pirganj upazila on charge of killing the bird. A mobile court led by Pirganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sabbir Ahmed, also an executive magistrate, awarded six months' imprisonment and a fine of Tk 600 to each of the accused. Bashir Uddin alias Kalu of Jhaljhali village caught the bird and brought it to Kalupir Bazar of the same upazila in the evening on January 15, police and locals said. Informed by UP Chairman Md Ekramul Haque, UNO Sabbir Ahmed brought the bird to Fun City compound and asked Upazila Livestock Officer Dr Abul Kalam Azad to arrange its treatment. Dr Azad continued giving treatment to the bird, visiting it regularly during the last few days. "This is very unfortunate. We tried to cure the bullet-hit bird but the unscrupulous men killed it," UNO Sabbir Ahmed told this correspondent over cell phone yesterday evening.
