Protest Against Rape, Murder of Schoolgirl
Blockade of roads, waterways in three hill districts today
Women leaders of Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) will enforce a half-day roads and waterways blockade in Rangamati, Bandarban and Khagrachhari districts today, demanding arrest and punishment of the culprits who raped and killed a schoolgirl.
They announced the programme at a press conference at Roof Restaurant in the town yesterday.
Stop Violence against Women (SVAW), Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, CHT Women Network, Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trusts (BLAST) and Nari Paskha, jointly organised the press conference.
The speakers at the press conference also demanded capital punishment to the rapists.
On December 21 last year, a 13-year-old girl of Borodalupara village under Kawkhali upazila in Rangamati was killed after rape, allegedly by a group of Bangalee settlers when she was returning home from a nearby jungle with their cattle, they said.
The speakers also condemned the police failure to ensure stern action against the offenders.
Police arrested an accused out of four--Md Alauddin, 25, of Uttar Nalyachhari village, on January 4 following a murder case filed by the deceased's mother with Kawkhali police station, said Monzurul Alam Mollah, investigation officer (IO) of the case.
Police were raiding different areas to arrest the rest suspects--Md Didar, Md Selim Khan and Md Mujib, said the IO.
The speakers also threatened to go for a tougher programme if their demands were not met immediately.
Later, they lit candles on district judge's court premises, protesting violence and repression against women and children.
