Murder at brick kiln
A brick kiln labourer was killed while two others were hit by bullets as criminals opened fire on them at a brick kiln in Matiranga upazila of the district on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Mohammad Faruk Hossain, 19, son of Mohammad Mafiz of Mymensingh district.
The injured are Abul Hossain, 55, son of Bazlul Ali of Lakkhipur district and Mohammad Shajahan, 30, son of Abdur Rahman of Tabalchhari area in Matiranga upazila of the district.
Faruk was hit by two bullets in his left chest and abdomen. Two bullets pierced the stomach of Abul Hossain while Shajahan received a bullet in his left hand.
Police quoting the witnesses said, an armed gang of ethnic community, numbering 8 to 10, tried to pick up Abul Hossain, manager of Bhai Bhai Brick Kiln at Gazinagar of Matiranga upazila, at gun point as he refused to pay illegal toll.
When the day labourers of the brick kiln chased the criminals, they opened fire on them leaving Faruk dead on the spot and two others hit by bullets.
Officer in-charge at Matiranga police station Mohammad Yusuf Mia said, police recovered the body of the deceased and sent it to Khagrachhari Adhunik Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
Quoting witnesses, he said that members of local United Peoples Democratic Front (UPDF) might have been involved in the incident.
Contacted, press and information secretary of UPDF Niran Chakma refuted his party's involvement.
Leaders of Parbatya Bangalee Chhatra Parishad (PBCP), a platform of Bangalee settlers here yesterday demanded immediate arrest and punishment of the criminals.
