BNP factions in Gopalganj clash

15 injured from both sides

At least 15 local activists of BNP were injured in a clash between two factions of the party over distributing handbills and leaflets in the district town on Wednesday night. Of the injured, Elias Hossain, 48, Tushar Sharif, 32, Tanjid Sheikh, 28 and Nazrul, 26, were admitted to Gopalganj General Hospital while the rest given first aid. Locals said, the clash took place when president of district unit BNP Sirajul Islam Siraj along with central party leader Kazi Asad handed out leaflets and handbills in REB office area in the town. The rival group, allegedly led by MH Khan Monju, former district president, attacked them following an altercation over the issue. As the news spread, the supporters of Siraj launched counter attack, leaving 15 from both sides injured. A microbus was also vandalised during the violence. Following the incident, the central leader left the district for the capital on the same night, said party sources.
