Jamaat's hartal call ignored

A Correspondent, Cox's Bazar
The Jamaat called dawn-to-dusk hartal here yesterday went unheeded as all the offices and educational institutions in the district remained open and traffic movement was normal. Cox's Bazar unit of Jamaat-e-Islami had earlier called the hartal, protesting arrest and demanding immediate release of its district unit leader and also chairman of Ukhia upazila parishad Advocate Shahjalal Chowdhury. During the hartal, a few pro-hartal activists vandalised at least 11 vehicles including rickshaws at different points of the town till 11:00am. But it all went vain as traffic movement, except for long distance buses, was like any other days. Babul Aktar, district superintendent of police in Cox's Bazar, said they detained 15 activists of Jamaat-e-Islami for their alleged involvement in vandalism.
