Teachers of Islamic University (IU) here yesterday decided to return to classes today as the authorities finally removed also the proctor and the student advisor. With this, a four and a half months long deadlock at the university came to an end yesterday. Campus sources said, vice-chancellor Prof Abdul Hakim Sarkar yesterday removed IU proctor Dr. Zillur Rahman and student advisor Dr. Talukdar L Hakim from their posts and appointed Prof Dr. Jahangir Hossain Mioln as proctor and Prof Dr. Mahbubur Rahman as student advisor. Earlier, the VC held separate meetings with different teachers' bodies -- IUTA, Bangabandhu Parishad, Zia Parishad and Green Forum -- at his office. "The VC assured us that the treasurer who is yet to be removed by the government will not attend his work from Monday," Prof Iqbal Hossain, general secretary of IUTA told reporters. After the fruitful talks, the teachers' bodies called off their agitation and decided to end their class boycott. The university teachers started their agitation on September 8 last year, demanding removal of then VC M. Ala Uddin, Pro-VC M. Kamal Uddin and Treasurer Sahajahn Ali. The stalemate begun after a huge controversy over the appointment of 132 teachers and officials at the university on the previous day. IUTA alleged massive corruption and nepotism in the recruitment process and also demanded its cancellation. They also demanded removal of the trio from their posts. No classes and examinations took place during the period as the teachers continued their agitation and work abstention. At a stage, the government relieved then VC M. Ala Uddin on December 27 and Pro-VC M. Kamal Uddin on January 1. Prof Abdul Hakim Sarkar of Dhaka University became the new VC but none was appointed to the post of Pro-VC and no decision was taken on relieving the treasurer of his duties. Then IUTA extended its agitation till the treasurer was removed. The teachers met the new VC on January 3 and urged him to remove the proctor and the student advisor terming them 'corrupt'. Finally the authorities removed the proctor and the student advisor yesterday, ending around 18 weeks of deadlock at the university.
