Indian criminal held with gun in Benapole

Police arrested a suspected criminal of India on charge of his bid to kill a local Awami League leader in Putkhali union of Benapole on Friday. They also recovered a pistol and two bullets from his possession. The arrestee is Salam Mondol, son of Yusuf Mondol of Satbaria village under Gopalganj Police Station of 24 Parganas district in India. Faruk Hossain, officer in-charge of Benapole Police Station, said Salam had been living at a rented house at Boroachra in Benapole for several days. Salam along with his some accomplices went to the house of Sirajul Islam Siraj, organising secretary of Putkhali union AL, at night. They started searching for Siraj frantically. Sensing the presence of the gang, locals chased them and caught Salam along with the arms and bullets while the rest managed to flee. Later, he was handed over to police. During primary interrogation, Salam said he came for killing the AL leader. A case was filed in this connection, said the OC.
