33 injured, house set on fire in three upazilas

At least 35 people were injured and a house was set afire during separate incidents of clashes at Nabinagar, Akhaura and Bancharampur upazilas of the district on Wednesday night. In Nabinagar, some youths led by Chhoton Babu stabbed Chhatra League municipality unit President Moniruzzama while he was coming to the upazila headquarter from Pashchimpara at around 7:30pm. Soon after the incident, BCL men took out a procession at the upazila headquarters, vandalised the Babu's house in the municipality and set fire to another house in the area. They also scuffled with some locals, leaving ten of them injured. Police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. BCL leader Moniruzzama was admitted to Comilla Medical College Hospital in a critical condition. No one was arrested in connection with the attack on Moniruzzaman as of 6:00pm yesterday. At Akhaura Bazar, supporters of two shop owners clashed at the bazar at around 8:00pm, leaving at least 15 people from both sides injured. The clash ensued following an altercation between Sumon Miah and Babul Parvez over parking a motorbike by Sumon in front of Parvez's shop. Being informed, law enforcers from Akhaur Police station rushed to the spot and dispersed the clashing groups. They also fired rubber bullets to bring the situation under control. In Bancharampur, At least 10 people sustained injuries as two rival groups of villagers--one led by Zulhash Mia and the other by Jamir Ali--clashed at Pahariakandi village on Wednesday night. Locals said the clash ensued following an altercation between Zulhash and Jamir at the village. After a few minutes, supporters of the two equipped with lethal weapons swooped on each other at around 8:30pm. Zulhash also received injuries during the clash. He was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital while the rest nine to Bancharampur Upazila Health Complex. No case was filed in connection with the incident as of 6:00pm yesterday.
