Our Correspondent, Rangamati
Women leaders have threatened to block roads and waterways in three hill districts on January 27 if the killers of schoolgirl Thomaching Marma are not arrested by January 26. They gave the ultimatum to the district administration from a rally held at New Market in Rangamati town yesterday. Bangladesh Mohila Parishad, CHT Women Network, Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST) and Nari Pakkha organised the rally demanding arrest of the culprits who killed Thoma Ching Marma after rape in Kawkhali upazila of the district on December 21 last year. Thomaching Marma,13, a class viii student of Kawkhali Girls' High School and daughter of late Sui Thui Prue Marma, was killed after rape by a gang at Borodalupara village under Kalampati union of the upazila. Thomaching went to a nearby jungle at around 3:00pm to take their cows back home. As she did not return until 6:00pm, family members started looking for her in the nearby jungle. At one stage, they found Thomaching body lying on the ground in the jungle. Being informed, police went to spot, recovered the body and sent it to Rangamati General Hospital. Police found injury marks on the face and neck of the victim. According to autopsy report, the girl was raped and then strangled. Following a case filed by victim's mother Majhai Prue Marma with Kawkhali Police Station, police arrested a suspect named Md Alauddin, 25, son of Mofizur Rahman of Uttar Nalyachhari village under Kawkhali uapzila on January 4. The speakers at the rally criticised the local police administration for its, what they said, failure in arresting the killers of Thomaching Marma. They also demanded compensation for the victim's family.
