Leaders of three front organisations of United Peoples Democratic Front (UPDF) here yesterday demanded exemplary punishment to HWF leader Kalpana Chakma's abductors. They were holding a protest rally in Changi Square area of the district town in the afternoon. The three organisations are Hill Women's Federation (HWF), Pahari Chhatra Parishad (PCP) and Democratic Youth Forum (DYF). The speakers at the rally discussed Kalpana Chakma abduction case on trial at Rangamati CMM court. The court has fixed January 16 for its next hearing. They alleged that a vested quarter was out to save the main accused and his accomplices. They demanded a fair reinvestigation into the case and immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the alleged killers. Otherwise a tougher movement will be launched, the speakers threatened. Organiser of UPDF Sadar upazila unit Charan Singh Tanchonga, office secretary of HWF district unit Sikha Chakma, president of DYF district unit Nikolash Chakma and vice-president of PCP district unit Aungkan Chakma, among others, spoke at the rally. Earlier, the leaders and activists of the organisations brought out a protest procession from Shanirbar Bazaar point and paraded the road to Changi Square in the district town. Kalpana Chakma, then organising secretary of HWF, was kidnapped allegedly by an armed gang from her home at New Lalyaghona village in Baghaichhari upazila of Rangamati district on June 12, 1996.
