3 'robbers' beaten to death in 2 districts

Two alleged robbers were beaten to death by a mob at Arpara village in Sadar upazila of Kushtia early yesterday, reports our correspondent. The deceased were identified Arif Hossain, 25, son of Alam Hossain of Shankardia village of the upazila, and Ashraful Islam, 35, son of Atiqul Islam of Dhambalpur village in Alamdanga upazila in Chuadanga district. Another member of the gang, Hasibul, 15, caught by the mob, was handed over to the police. Police recovered one pistol, three bullets, a Chinese axe from the spot. Joynul Abedin, additional superintendent of police in Kushtia, said a gang of 7-8 robbers stormed into the house of one Idris Ali at Arpara village around 1:30am. Hearing screams of the family members, neighbours rushed to the spot and surrounded the house, the ASP said. At one stage, they entered the house and caught three of the gang while others fled the scene, he said. The villagers beat up two of them indiscriminately, leaving the duo dead on the spot, he added. Police recovered the bodies and sent those to Kushtia General Hospital. Injured Hasibul, also of Shakardia village, was arrested by police. Away in Naraynganj, another alleged robber was killed in a mob beating at Utma village under Sonargaon upazila early yesterday, reports our correspondent. The deceased was identified as Faysur Rahman, 38, of Khizirpur area in the upazila. Acting officer in-charge (OC) Harun-ur-Rashid of Sonargaon PS said, a gang numbering 15-16 were preparing to commit a robbery. Sensing the presence of the robbers, locals announced it through the loud speaker of the local mosque. The villagers chased the robbers, caught two of them and gave them a good beating, leaving Faysur dead on the spot while Musa, 40, seriously injured, the OC said. Faysur was a charge-sheeted accused in three cases, including for robbery, with the police station, the OC said.
