2 killed as villagers clash in B'baria

Fierce fighting between two rival groups at Chitri village under Nabinagar upazila on Wednesday evening left two people dead and 10 others injured. The deceased were identified as Gutu Mia, 48, and Mono Mia, 70, of the village. According to Officer-in-Charge Khandaker Fuad Ruhani of Nabinagar Police Station, Gutu Mia was hit with a spear and died instantly while Mono Mia died of cardiac arrest during the clash. Police and local people said there had been a longstanding rivalry between former chairman of Pashchim Nabinagar Union Parishad (UP) Saiful Islam alias Shishu and incumbent Chairman Golam Kibria alias Golap over establishing supremacy at Chitra village. Both belong to the same village. Following an altercation between Shishu and Golap at around 6:00pm, their supporters equipped with lethal weapons, including spears, locked in a clash that lasted for an hour, leaving the two of Shishu group dead and 10 others from both sides injured. Being informed, police rushed to the spot, dispersed the clashing groups and brought the situation under control. The injured were admitted to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital, Comilla Modern Hospital and Nabinagar upazial Health Complex. No one was arrested in connection with the clash as of yesterday afternoon. Police have been deployed at the village to avert any further incident.
