Gambler drowns while escaping police raid

A gambler drowned in a pond while he was trying to evade police raid at Satpar village in Sadar upazila of the district on Tuesday evening. The deceased was identified as Hitu Bala, 34, of the village. Local people said police raided the area while Hitu Bala along with his associates was involved in the act of betting money in a card game on a cropland adjacent to Satpar Union Parishad office at around 6:00pm. Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, Hitu and his associates started running to escape arrest. Suddenly, he dashed against a tree and fell into a pond. Locals rescued Hitu in an unconscious state and took him to Gopalganj Sadar Hospital where the doctors declared him dead. Police later recovered the body and sent it the hospital morgue for autopsy. Sub-Inspector Abdus Salam of Baultoli police investigation centre, said they are looking for Hitu's associates. No case was filed with Sadar Police Station as of 5:00pm yesterday.
