Cotton factory, jute godowns gutted
A cotton factory, two jute godowns and several shops were gutted in two separate fire incidents in Barisal city and Gourandi upazila yesterday.
No causality was reported but at least 8 people sustained minor injuries while trying to extinguish the fire.
Fire service sources said, fire burnt a cotton factory in Puran Koila Ghat area of Barisal city yesterday afternoon.
The factory caught fire from an electric short circuit at about 3:30pm and rapidly engulfed the goods, damaging cotton worth Tk seven lakh and two machines worth Tk three lakh, claimed factory owner Habibur Rahman.
Fire service men rushed to the spot and extinguished the blaze at about 4:00pm, said Faruk Hossain Shikdar, senior station manager at Barisal Fire Service Station.
Damages caused by the fire would be more than Tk five lakh, he said.
In another incident at Sharikal Bandar market in Gouranadi upazila, two jute godowns of Harunor Rashid Howlader and Shahin Sharif, a bakery of Shah Alam Matubbar, one cycle shop of Samsul Alam were burnt while one grocery shop of Abdur Rahim was damaged partially yesterday morning.
Owners of the affected enterprises claimed that the damages would exceed Tk 20 lakh.
