Sit-in on roads demanding release of Fakhrul

District unit BNP observed a three-hour long sit-in on the roads of the district town yesterday, demanding release of its acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and withdrawal all false cases against him. The programme began at 11:00am and continued till 2:00pm. During the sit-in, several hundred local leaders and activists took position on different main points of major roads in the town, including the old bus stand area on Thakurgaon-Panchagarh highway, Art Gallery intersection and Thakurgaon intersection. Vehicular movement came to a halt during the programme, causing immense sufferings to both long and short distance passengers. The BNP men also brought out a procession in the town. The programme was followed by a discussion at the BNP office in the town where district unit general secretary Toimur Rahman, joint secretary Obaidullah Masud, organising secretary Poigam Ali and others spoke. The speakers threatened to launch a tougher movement if their leader was not freed immediately. Meanwhile, police arrested 12 activists of JCD and Shramik Dal in separate drives in the town from Tuesday mid-night to early yesterday. The arrestees were identified as Masud Rana, Zakir Hossain, Md. Arif, Dipu, Sohag, Shamim, Alamgir, Nayan, Sujan, Robiul, Sona Miah and Golam Robbani. OC of Thakurgaon PS Zahidul Islam Chowdhury said, they launched the overnight drive and arrested the opposition activists apprehending that they might create chaos, deteriorating the law and order in the town during their agitation programme.
