Violence against women on rise in Sylhet
450 cases filed in 11 months from Jan '12
Incidents of violence against women have marked a sharp rise in Sylhet in the last 11 months.
At least 450 cases for torture on women were filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act in the district during the time and the figure is around 150 more than that of the corresponding period of the last year.
According to sources, crimes like women repression, torture, instigating suicide and murder for dowry have increased in the district this year due to the deterioration of law and order.
The aforesaid cases were filed in connection with women repression in the district from January to November this year while it was 300 during the same period in 2011.
The figure was revealed at a view-exchange meeting organised by Bangladesh Mohila Parashad, Sylhet at the auditorium of the district council recently.
At the meeting, Superintendent of Police of the district Sakhawat Hossain said the women repression related cases were on the increase.
Highest number of incidents of torture on women took place in Golapganj upazila of the district, followed by Kanaighat, Jaintapur and Jakiganj upazilas while the lowest number of incidents was recorded in Balaganj, the SP said.
Most of the incidents occurred over dowry, he added. The 450 cases include 191 for dowry, 59 for raping women and abusing children, 128 for abduction and 72 for other forms of crimes.
Police also recorded six women trafficking incidents during the period. Some cases have already been disposed of although the number of women repression cases is on the rise, sources said.
