Five brick kilns illegally set up on cropland sealed off
A mobile court sealed off five illegally set up brick kilns at Jagannathpur village in Sadar upazila on Sunday evening.
The court also partially destroyed the brick kilns to stop their operations.
The five brickfields were using illegal drum chimneys in violation of environment rules, posing serious threat to the croplands in the surrounding areas. They were also set up without obtaining any license from the Department of Environment (DoE), mobile court sources said.
The sealed off brickfields were Hezabul Bricks, Adam Bricks, Sadekul Bricks, Manik Bricks and Jahangir Bricks.
According to the Brick Burning (Control) Act, 1989, setting up of brick kilns in municipalities and residential areas and near fruit orchards or on cropland is prohibited.
Additional district Magistrate Mirza Ali Ahsraf, with a police team conducted the two-hour-long drive at the brick kilns from 5:00pm.
Earlier, mobile courts fined several illegally set up brick kilns who were using drum chimneys.
The Brick Kiln Owners' Association of Thakurgaon also observed different programmes in the town to press for punitive actions against those operating such illegal brickfields.
In Gaibandha, a brickfield worker was buried alive when a chunk of earth collapsed on him in Sadar union of Sadullapur upazila yesterday, reports our correspondent.
The dead was identified as Bajitullah, 40, a worker of 'Prapti Brickfield' who resided at Chak Bhagabanpur village in the upazila.
Locals said, a chunk of earth fell on Bajit while he was working at the brick kiln in the morning, leaving him dead on the spot.
