Butterfly fair at JU December 7
A daylong butterfly fair will be held in Zahir Raihan auditorium of Jahangirnagar University on December 7.
The fair with the theme “Urley Akashey projapoti, Prokiti Paye Noton Goti†(butterflies flying give nature a new life), has been organised by the zoology department of JU for the third time.
Dr Mohammad Monwar Hossain, associate professor of the zoology department and the fair organiser, announced the fair at a press conference on campus yesterday.
About 275 species of live butterflies will be exhibited in the auditorium and the botanical garden on campus at the fair.
Among the 275 species, 61 are said to be newly discovered in Bangladesh and many more species remain undiscovered in the country, said sources.
The fair will include a children's art competition on nature and butterflies, photography competition on butterflies, butterfly photo exhibition, live butterfly display and documentary on butterflies.
JU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Anwar Hossain is expected to inaugurate the fair where EU Ambassador William Hanna, Estihak Uddin Ahmed, country's representative of IUCN and Dijen Sharma, renowned environmentalist, are expected to be present as special guests while researchers from the university and outside will participate.
“Raising mass awareness and promoting the importance of butterflies in maintaining ecological balance is the foremost objective of the fair,†said Dr Mohammad Monwar Hossain.
Mentioned the ongoing work of naming butterfly species in Bangla, Mohammad Monwar said, “So far, we have named 68 species in Bangla.â€
In the fair, Dhaka University's Prof Dr Syed Humayun Kabir will be posthumously honoured for his contribution to butterfly research and overall achievement in the field of zoology.
Besides, a book of poems for children will be launched, which contains 40 poems written by poet Prof Khaled Hossain, also the chairman of JU's Bangla department.
