Satkhira jail without doctor for 14 years

Unb, Satkhira
About 1,000 prisoners at the district jail are deprived of minimum treatment as the lone post of physician at the prison has been lying vacant for the last 14 years. There are at least 954 prisoners, including men and women, at the jail. Jail sources said, the post of assistant surgeon was never filled up since the establishment of the jail in 1998. As a result, the authorities on and often face difficulties in providing emergency treatment to the prisoners. They always take the sick prisoners to the district Sadar Hospital. If the post of assistant surgeon was fulfilled, it could be possible for the authorities to give the prisoners minimum treatment on their own. This would also help them get rid of additional responsibilities of treating patients at other hospitals, they said. The jail authorities alleged that they never got any positive response from the higher authorities despite repeated request to arrange appointment of a doctor to the vacant post. Contacted, jail superintendent Nurunnabi said that a decision was taken in this regard at a coordination meeting of the deputy commissioner long ago but no doctor was appointed by the authorities. Dr. Maruf Hossain, resident medical officer at district Sadar Hospital, said the higher authorities have been urged to appoint an assistant surgeon at jail on an urgent basis.
