Probe into alleged corruption of VC, pro-VC starts

Our Correspondent, Kushtia
A three-member committee yesterday started investigation into alleged corruption of the vice-chancellor, Pro-vice-chancellor and treasurer of Islamic University. The University Grants Commission (UGC) formed the body headed by UGC member Professor Mohabbat Khan on October 23. Two other members are UGC member Abul Hasan and deputy secretary Ferdous Zaman. On the first day, the probe body members talked with Vice-Chancellor Prof Alauddin, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof Kamal Uddin and Treasurer Prof Shahjahan Ali, registrar office sources said. Committee member Ferdous Zaman said they will stay on the campus until November 29 to investigate the matter. Teaches and most of the officials and employees have refrained from going to the campus since September 8 due to the deadlock that followed controversy over appointment of 132 teachers and officials in the university on September 7. No class and examination were held at the institution during the period. Islamic University Teachers Association (IUTA) in a press conference held at its office on the campus on Sunday urged the government for immediate appointment of honest and competent persons as new vice chancellor, pro-vice chancellor and treasurer, removing the present ones. In a written statement, the IUTA said the persons presently holding the three key posts are 'unwanted' on the campus and they are trying to motivate the government high ups to appoint as their successors a few persons who are directly or indirectly involved in 'corrupt practices' as their associates. “Only appointment of honest and competent persons will bring an end to the prevailing stalemate,” Prof Yakub Ali, president of IUTA, said replying to a question at the press briefing. IU Officers Association in a general meeting held at the university dormitory on Monday expressed solidarity with IUTA's ongoing movement for removal of the three key position holders at the university. At the meeting presided over by Robiul Islam, president of the association, they supported the IUTA's ongoing agitation and announced three hours' work abstention every day until the vice chancellor, pro-vice chancellor and treasurer are removed.
