Two housewives murdered, 6 held
Two housewives were murdered in Jessore and Pabna districts yesterday and the day before.
Our Benapole correspondent reported that a housewife was beaten to death by her husband allegedly for dowry at Gatipara village under Benapole Police Station of Jessore in the morning.
The victim was identified as Jahanara Bagume, 19, wife of Anisur Rahman Chandan of the village.
Hafizar Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Benapole Police Station, quoted neighbours as saying that Jahanara was married off to Chandan about two years ago. Since then, Chandan used to torture Jahanara for dowry.
The couple locked in an altercation over the issue yesterday morning and one stage, Chandan beat up Jahanara, resulting in her death on the spot.
Later, Chandan hung the body from the ceiling of his house in a bid to prove that Jahanara committed suicide.
Being informed, police went to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Jessore Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. They also arrested Chandan.
In Pabna, a housewife was killed at Vojendrapur village in Sadar upazila on Sunday morning, reports our correspondent.
After the incident, police arrested five brothers of her husband for their alleged involvement in the murder.
The victim was identified as Phuljan Khatun, 45, wife of Kashem Ali of the village.
Md Nure Alam, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Pabna Police Station, said Phuljan was hacked to death when her husband Kashem went out of the house to say Fajr prayers.
On return, Kashem found the body of his wife lying on the floor of their room and informed the police, he added.
Police went to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Pabna Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Phuljan might have been killed by the family members of her husband following a feud over property, the OC further said.
Police arrested Phuljan's five brothers-in-law from the house. They are Mokbul Sheikh, Md Hasanuzzaman, Md Shamiul Alam, Md Saidul Islam and Md Ekramul Islam. They were yesterday produced in a court that sent them to jail.
Victim's brother filed a case with Pabna Sadar Police Station on Sunday night, accusing the five arrestees.
