No sign yet to end stalemate at Islamic University

Amanur Aman, Kushtia
There is no sign yet in sight for end to the nearly three-month-long deadlock at Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia. The offices are open but they look desolate as teaches and most of the officials and employees have refrained from going to campus since September 8 due to the deadlock that followed controversy over appointment of 132 teachers and officials in the university on September 7. No class and examination were held at the institution during the period. Meanwhile, Islamic University Teachers Association (IUTA) in a press conference held at its office on the campus on Sunday urged the government for immediate appointment of honest and competent persons as new vice chancellor, pro-vice chancellor and treasurer, removing the present ones. In a written statement, the IUTA said the persons presently holding the three key posts are 'unwanted' on the campus and they are trying to motivate the government high ups to appoint as their successors a few persons who are directly or indirectly involved in 'corrupt practices' as their associates. “Only appointment of honest and competent persons will bring an end to the prevailing stalemate,” Prof Yakub Ali, president of IUTA, said replying to a question at the press briefing. IU Officers Association in a general meeting held at the university dormitory yesterday expressed solidarity with IUTA's ongoing movement for removal of the three key position holders at the university. At the meeting presided over by Robiul Islam, president of the association, they supported the IUTA's ongoing agitation and announced three hours' work abstention every day until the vice chancellor, pro-vice chancellor and treasurer are removed. Meanwhile, the teachers and other staffs are worried due to 'uncertainty' over payment of salary of the running month as there is nobody to take decision regarding any important matter in absence of the three topmost officials on the campus for the last six days, campus sources said. Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Alauddin did not come to the campus yesterday although he was to join his office after four days' leave from Wednesday, said the sources at the registrar's office. During Prof Alauddin' leave, Treasurer Prof Sahajahan Ali was handed over the charge of acting vice chancellor but he did not go to campus on Thursday and afterwards. Pro-Vice Chancellor Kamal Uddin has been on leave for 13 days since November 20. Registrar Dr Moslem Uddin confirmed absence of the three high officials at the university. This correspondent talked to Treasurer Prof Sahajahan Ali over phone, he said, "I am not going to campus as I feel insecure there.” Despite repeated attempts, this correspondent could not reach the vice chancellor and the pro-vice chancellor through their mobile phones. As this correspondent talked to Prof Alauddin's family members in Dhaka over phone, they declined to say anything about the whereabouts of the IU vice chancellor, citing 'security reasons'. Meanwhile, a group of pro-Awami League teachers of IU led by Prof Dr Abul Ahsan Choudhury went to Dhaka on Sunday to inform the government high ups of the university situation. The teachers belong to Bangabandhu Parishad.
