Stone extraction resumes
Stone extraction resumed in three quarries of Companiganj and Goainghat upazilas of the district on Wednesday.
Stone extraction came to a halt in the district 20 days' ago after a court imposed restriction on lifting stones from the quarries by using a machine, which is locally called “Boma†machine, as it causes massive environment pollution.
On November 19, local administration gave permission to extract stone from the quarries by using irrigation machine instead of “Boma†machine against the backdrop of severe stone crisis and unemployment problem in the region.
Stone extraction resumed at two quarries in Companiganj and one quarry in Bisnakandi of Goainghat from Wednesday morning, stone businessman Shahed Ahmed said.
On June 2, a joint team of the Department of Environment (DoE) and local administration in a drive destroyed about 50 “Boma †machine at the Bholaganj stone quarry.
The team also filed eight cases for lifting stone from the country's largest quarry by using the illegal machine defying a DoE order for more than a decade, causing serious environmental pollution in the area.
The team also burnt three and seized four “Boma†machines.
