Early arrival of winter has pushed up sale of warm clothes at makeshift shops at different places of Thakurgoan and Panchagarh districts. Winter usually comes to this region at the end of November or early December but this year, the people of the two northern districts have been experiencing cold since the first week of November. Taking into consideration last year's experience of severe cold, people belonging to low and fixed income groups are crowding the makeshift shops to buy sweaters, jackets, cardigans, woolen caps and mufflers to get relief of biting cold. While visiting a makeshift market at Thakurgaon Government Boys' High School ground on Wednesday, this correspondent saw many people, especially from lower-middle class and low-income group, crowded different shops to buy warm clothes. I have come to the market to buy some second-hand warm clothes as they are comfortable to wear and also keep body warm," he said. Replying to a query, he said the prices of warm clothes are higher than last year. Hakim Ali, a day labourer of Akcha village under the same upazila, said he has come to buy a sweater or a jacket for his only son. “I am yet to buy any of the two as the sellers demand high priceâ€. Meser Ali, owner of a shop at the makeshift market, said, “I have sold a number of second-hand warm clothes today. Demand for second-hand warm clothes is much higher than the new ones.†Day-labourers, rickshaw-pullers and low paid employees of different government and private organisations crowd the makeshift market every day, the shop owner further said. Habibar Rahman, who sells second-hand warm clothes, including jeans, jackets, blazers and sweaters, at Boda Bazar under Boda upazila of Panchagarh said many well-off people, especially youths, are also buying these items from the second-hand clothes' shops as their quality and designs are good.
