Tk 1.5cr fake cigarettes seized in Kushtia
Police early yesterday unearthed a fake cigarette factory and recovered around Tk 1.5 crore fake cigarettes of different popular brands at Amla in Mirpur upazila of the district.
The law enforcers also arrested five workers including wife of one of the owners of the fake factory. They also rescued 13 child labourers from the spot but could not arrest the two owners of the factory as both managed to flee the scene.
Police said that a joint team of Kushtia Detective Branch (DB) and Mirpur police raided the second floor of a three storied building owned by one Nazrul Islam Sentu at about 2.30am.
Shikdar Moshiur Rahman, officer in-charge (OC) of Mirpur police station told this correspondent that five rooms of the floor were being used to make Benson and Hedges (B&H), Gold Leaf, Star and many other brands.
Police said Bokul Hossain and Mofizul Islam, sons of Abdul Kuddus of Sonatola in Bogra district owned the fake factory.
“Bokul and Mofiz were at the house but they went into hiding sensing the presence of policeâ€, the OC said.
Police arrested five people including Mofizul's wife Lucky Khtun, 24 and seized the equipment to make the fake items.
The rescued child labourers, aged 6-14, included five girls.
A case was filed with Mirpur police station accusing seven people including Bokul and Mofiz, police said.
