Coastal fishermen to be brought under group insurance
The government is going to bring the fishermen of the coastal areas of the country under a group insurance scheme taking into consideration the risks involved in sea fishing.
This was disclosed at a view-exchange meeting between officials of Jiban Bima Corporation (JBC) and costal fishermen at the office of the Deputy Commissioner last week.
Chaired by Md Akram Hossain, DC of Bagerhat district, the meeting was addressed, among others, by JBC Managing Director Parikshit Datta Choudhury, Joint Secretary of the Fisheries and Livestock Ministry Shamsul Kibria, BOBP Managing Director Jugraj Singh Jadob and JBC General Manger Md Moshiur Rahman.
At the meeting, the fishermen gave account of the problems and risks they have to face while fishing in the sea.
The meeting was informed that some 20 lakh people of 147 upazilas of the 17 coastal districts are involved in fishing.
They go for fishing in the deep sea and rivers with trawlers and fishing boats, risking their lives.
Most often they are affected by storm and come under attack by forest robbers of the Sundarbans during fishing.
In case of death, each fisherman will get Tk 2 lakh under the three-year insurance scheme. For this, every fisherman will have to pay Tk 1,200 as premium annually, officials said.
And each group will consist of 50 to 100 fishermen members.
