Stalking triggers clash of villagers: 40 injured

At least 40 people were injured in a clash between two groups of villagers in Kendua upazila in Netrakona yesterday over stalking a schoolgirl. Of the injured, Faizul Talukder, Romzan Mia, Dalim, Chatu Mia and Hakim Mia, were admitted to Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital in critical condition while the rest treated at local health complex, reports our correspondent. Alamgir Hossain, officer in-charge at Kendua police station, said a youth of Komolpur village made an indecent remark at a girl of Chilimpur on her way to school in the morning. The people of the villages then locked in a clash, which lasted about two hours from 12:00pm, over the issue, leaving at least 40 from both sides injured. On information, police rushed in and fired 30 gunshots and 20 rounds of tear gas shell to bring the situation under control. Local administration imposed Section 144 on the areas to avert further trouble, said the OC. Away in Gaibandha, at least seven people were injured as an alleged stalker along with his accomplices opened fire on them at Barobaldia village in Sadar upazila on Saturday, reports our correspondent. Police said Shah Jamal, son of Siddique Mia of village Boulbari in Sunderganj upazila, recently made a proposal to a college girl of the village but she refused it. Later, a gang of 10/12, allegedly led by Siddique, stormed into the house of the victim at midnight and picked up her at gunpoint. Hearing the hue and cry, locals chased the gang. But seven were injured as they came under the gun attack. The villagers then caught one of the attackers, Faruk Mia, and handed him over to police after giving him a good beating and rescued the kidnapped girl. Of the injured, Rashiduzzaman Sebu, Atiqur Rahman Baten, Aminul Islam and Motiur Rahman were admitted to Gaibandha Hospital in critical condition. A case was filed with Sadar police station in this connection.
