Detained war crimes suspect Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Ameer Maulana Abdus Subhan in collaboration with Pakistani occupation forces killed over 500 people in two unions of Sujanagar upazila of the district during the Liberation War in 1971. After visiting the unions, a two-member investigation team of International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) told this to journalists at local circuit house yesterday. The team, comprising ICT Prosecutor Sultan Mahmud Simon and Investigation Officer Matiur Rahman visited Shyamnagar, Vatipara, Harirampur, Singhanagar, Sindurpur and Fokidpur villages under Satbania union and Tarabariain village under Tarabariain union in the upazila and found at least 25 mass graves at the villages. “During investigation, we have recorded the statements of over 100 witnesses to the atrocities and brutalities committed by Subhan,” said Prosecutor Sultan Mahamud Simon. According to the witnesses, Subhan along with Razakars and Pakistani occupation forces attacked the villages in May, 1971, killed over 500 people and torched several hundred houses, said Investigation Officer Matiur Rahman. Some of them told us that Maulana Subhan along with Pakistan troops killed two elderly people in Satbaria union while they were reciting the Quran, said the ICT team members. “We are collecting evidence of crimes committed by Maulana Subhan during Liberation War and recording the statements of the witnesses. After investigation, we will submit the charge sheet against him,” they added. Members of an intelligence agency detained Maulana Abdus Subhan at Bangabandhu Bridge toll plaza in Tangail on September 20. They detained the Jamaat leader and his two associates at around 8:30am when they were traveling by a jeep from Dhaka to Pabna. Subhan was vice-president of the Pabna unit of the peace committee, an organisation of Pakistani collaborators, according to the report on the findings of the People's Inquiry Commission on the activities of the war criminals and the collaborators. The field level investigations have revealed that Subhan organised Al-Badr and Razakars, formed the peace committee in the district and was involved in a number of crimes against humanity.
