UP chairman lands in jail in fraud case
Shaheenur Rahman Hamid alias Shaheen, chairman of Roykali union parishad in Akkelpur upazila of the district, was sent to jail on Tuesday afternoon following his arrest in a fraud case.
Police arrested Shaheenur Rahman Hamid from Akkelpur upazila parishad premises in the afternoon.
Earlier, Hares Uddin alias Hares Member, member of Roykali union parishad, filed the case with Akkelpur police station in the morning, accusing Shaheen of extorting money from him on false pleas.
In the case statement, Hares Member alleged that Shaheen took Tk one lakh from him promising to get him a project work, but he embezzled the money breaching the promise.
After arrest, police produced Shaheen before a court of Joypurhat after sometime and the judge ordered to send him to jail, rejecting his bail prayer.
In Faridpur, a court on Wednesday sentenced a man to 17 years in prison for keeping arms in his possession.
The convict was Tayob Sheikh, 25, resident of Ramkantapur village in Sadar upazila in the district.
According to the prosecution, police arrested Tayob Sheikh along with one foreign-made pistol and three bullets from Niltuli area of the district town on August 18, 2011.
Later, a case was filed by SI Akhil Kumar Biswas of Faridpur Kotwali police station in this connection.
After examining records and witnesses, Additional District Sessions Judge Md. Barikuzzaman handed down the verdict.
