Jhalakathi Jasas secretary arrested with arms

Jhalakathi district secretary of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Samajik Sangskritik Sangstha (Jasas), the socio-cultural wing of main opposition BNP, was arrested with a pistol and three bullets early yesterday. Abdul Mannan, Officer in charge at Jhalakathi Sadar police station, said a team of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested Zahirul Huq Sohel alias 'Pingri' Sohel, 37, from Gaabkhan Bridge area and handed him over to police. Kabirul Islam, deputy assistant director of Rab-8, who lodged a case in this connection, said that a Rab team while checking transports in the bridge area on Jhalakathi-Khulna road, arrested Sohel along with the arms and ammo. Pingri Sohel is a listed criminal. He was a cadre of former state minister of law Shahjahan Omar and led attacks on journalists at Jhalakathi Press Club and local daily Shatokantha on December 8, 2003, police said. In Gopalganj, Rab-8 arrested three criminals along with one shutter gun and a bullet in Shankarpasha-Kalna ferryghat area under Kasiani upazila on Saturday night, reports a correspondent. The arrestees are Sohel Sheikh, 26, Md. Masum Hossain, 25 and Md. Imran Sikder of Bhutpasa, Jangal Mukundapur and Shankarpasa villages in the upazila. Among them, Sohel Shiekh is wanted by police in a murder case. Rab sources said, acting a tip off, a team of elite force at Madaripur camp, raided the office of Aanjurul Islam Aanju, former chairman of the Ratail union under the upazila and arrested them along with the arms. Besides, the team seized a motorbike, five mobile sets and some cash taka from them. Our Correspondent in Benapole, Jessore, adds: DB police arrested an arms peddler along with a foreign made pistol, six bullets and two magazines at Mohisadanga village under Benapole Port PS yesterday. The arrestee was identified as Rahmat Ali, 34, son of Mozammel Hossain of the village. DB police sources said, on secret information, a team raided Mohisadanga village and arrested Rahmat along with the arms and ammo at about 5:00am.
