Hanif threatens to expel rebel candidate Rana

Awami League (AL) Joint Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif has said rebel AL candidate Amanur Rahman Khan Rana will face expulsion if he does not withdraw his candidature from by-election to Tangail-3 (Ghatail) parliamentary seat within three days. He sounded the warning while addressing a meeting of workers of AL candidate Shahidul Islam Lebu at Ghatail Upazila Parishad auditorium yesterday afternoon. Hanif asked the party men to gear up election campaign and seek vote for Lebu. Awami League Parliamentary Board (APB) nominated former Ghatail upazila AL general secretary Shahidul Islam Lebu for Tangail-3 (Ghatail) by election slated for November 18. Rana, religious affairs secretary of AL Tangail district unit, was one of the six AL nomination seekers. He filed nomination paper as an indefinite candidate and is still in the race. The convening committee of Ghatail upazila AL was declared dissolved in the meeting. District unit General Secretary Fazlur Rahman Faruque was given the additional charge of the upazila unit. Chaired by district AL General Secretary Fazlur Rahman Faruque, AL presidium member Kazi Jafarullah, Organizing Secretary Ahmad Hossain, AL leaders Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury MP, Abu Sayeed Al Mahmud Swapan and Enamul Haque Shamim, Jubo League Joint Secretary Mamunur Rashid Mamun, and Chhatra League President Bodiuzzaman Shohag spoke at the meeting. Meanwhile, Election Commissioner (EC) Brigadier Gen (retd) Mohammad Jabed Ali has said all necessary measures have been taken to hold a free and fair by-election in Tangail-3 constituency. The EC said this at a view exchange meeting on the by-election in the deputy commissioner's conference room yesterday. Returning Officer (RO) Syed Khurshid Anwar and Superintendent of Police AKM Hafiz Akter spoke at the meeting with Deputy Commissioner Anisur Rahman Miah in the chair.
