Villagers attack police as they arrest 'stalker'
At least 20 people, including four policemen, were injured in a clash between the law enforcers and the villagers over arrest of a 'stalker' at Sheikhpur in Golapganj upazila on Friday evening.
The clash ensued in the afternoon between the plainclothes police and villagers when the law enforcers picked up Abdul Basit from Mirganj Bazar on charge of stalking a girl, said officer in-charge at Golapganj police station Harun Ur Rashid Chowdhury.
After the arrest, over a hundred locals confined the policemen to the bazar and snatched Basit away from them as they could not identify the law enforcers in plainclothes.
On information, additional police rushed in and rescued their fellows while the accused managed to flee. In the evening, police again came under attack by the villagers when they attempted to arrest Basit at his home.
The law enforcers then fired 17 gunshots to bring the situation under control and arrested Bhadeshwar union parishad member Badrul Haque for attack on police, said the OC.
Badrul, however, claimed that he went to the place of occurrence to control the angry mob.
Police went to arrest Basit following a case filed by the brother of the stalking victim on Thursday.
A case was filed against the UP member and others for attacking police personnel, said the OC.
