Three housewives have been murdered allegedly for dowry in Jessore, Bogra and Jhenaidah.
Another housewife allegedly committed suicide in Magura.
A young housewife was killed allegedly by in-laws for dowry in Bagharpara upazila of Jessore on Monday night.
The deceased was identified as Muslima Khatun, 17, wife of Monirul Islam of Adampur village in the upazila, reports UNB.
Police said, Rabiul Islam Molla, father of Muslima of Monirampur upazila, had promised to give Tk two lakh and gold ornaments as dowry during the marriage of his daughter seven months ago.
Recently, Mariam Begum, mother-in-law of the Muslima, demanded a motorbike as dowry.
As Muslima turned town the demand, Mariam, aided by her younger brother and son, strangled her at about 11pm and hung the body with a beam of the house to prove the incident as a case of suicide.
Police arrested Monirul but other members of his family went into hiding.
In Bogra, a housewife was murdered allegedly by her husband and in-laws at Katnarpara in the town on Monday.
The deceased was identified as Reba Begum, 24, wife of Ashik Mahmud of the area, reports a correspondent.
Reba's uncle said, Ashik demanded Tk. 1.20 lakh as dowry for doing business. As she refused to bring dowry, Ashik along with his relatives tortured her and poured poison into her mouth.
Locals rescued Reba and took her to the Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital (SZMCH) where she died at 6:00pm.
In Jhenaidah, police arrested Rubel Hossain, 30, on Tuesday on charge of killing his wife at Sonardari village under Harinakundo upazila, reports our correspondent.
Police and locals said, Rima Khatun, 22, daughter of Ramzan Ali of Sonardari village under the upazila was killed allegedly for refusing to bring dowry.
Officer in-charge (OC) Abul Khayer of Harinakundo police station said, Rima Khatun, 22, was married to Rubel Hossain, son of Mosharrof Hossain of the same village four years back.
On Tuesday evening, Rubel and his wife were returning to home from his father-in-law's residence. But locals found the housewife's body lying by the side of a ditch in the area.
On information, police recovered the body at around 9:30pm.
Police later arrested Rubel on charge of killing Rima.
In Magura, a teenage housewife allegedly committed suicide by self-immolation at Arpara village in Shalikha upazila on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Jesmin Begum, 18, daughter of Atar Ali Khalashi of the village.
The reason behind the 'suicide' could not be known immediately. A case was filed in this connection.
