World Rivers Day observed

General people, alongside lawyers and environmentalists, are responsible for protecting the country's rivers while the government must enact and implement proper river protection laws, said Syeda Rizwana Hasan yesterday. The chief executive of Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (Bela) was addressing a book exhibition organised by Riverine People, a voluntary initiative to revive rivers, and Shrabon Prokashoni in the capital's Aziz Super Market. The exhibition marked World Rivers Day, observed by different environmental organisations yesterday. Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon and Burganga River Keeper jointly organised a rally at Basila High School on the banks of Buriganga river. Speakers at the rally observed that apart from the administration and environmentalists, people living along riverbanks must play a role to prevent pollution of rivers, including the Buriganga River, says a press release. Columnist Syed Abul Maksud suggested that, besides studying, children and youths living along riverbanks could conduct cleaning programmes at least one a month to keep rivers pollution free. He also urged the school authorities to take steps in this regard.
