Gazipur-4 By-Polls
Nominations filed by Rimi, Afsar
Simeen Hussain Rimi, the Awami League nominated candidate for September 30 Gazipur-4 (Kapasia upazila) constituency by-polls, submitted her nomination paper yesterday.
Meanwhile, her uncle Afsar Uddin Ahmad Khan also filed his nomination papers yesterday.
Rimi, accompanied by the party and alliance leaders, filed her candidacy to Mohammad Hasanuzzaman, district election officer, in Kapasia upazila auditorium.
Declining to talk to reporters, Rimi, daughter of Bangladesh's first prime minister Tajuddin Ahmed, said, “I prefer not to say anything that is contradictory to the election rules”, she said.
Asked about nomination of her uncle, Rimi said, “I hope we will be able to work together.”
On the other hand, Afsar Uddin filed his nomination paper to Mihir Sarowar Morshed, returning district officer.
Former state minister for public works during the previous reign of the AL government, Afsar Uddin is contesting the polls independently after failing to get support from the ruling party alliance.
According to the polls schedule, the last day for submitting applications is September 3 while the deadline for withdrawing candidature is September 13.
The EC officials will examine the applications on September 5.
A total of 2,11,884 voters are expected to cast their votes at 102 polling centres.
It will be a government holiday in the constituency on the day of voting when votes can be cast between 8:00am and 4:00pm.
The constituency fell vacant following the resignation of ruling Awami League lawmaker Tanjim Ahmad Sohel Taj on July 7.
