Navy, Coastguard cordon off dens of Sundarbans robbers
Members of Bangladesh Coastguard and Bangladesh Navy cordoned off the dens of the Sundarbans robbers, who kidnapped 36 fishermen early Friday, in the East Zone of the forest under Sharankhola upazila yesterday morning.
The members of Coastguard of Mongla West Zone and Bangladesh Navy of Mongal, led by Coastguard zonal commander M Saidur Rahman, encircled the robbers at Shelar Char and Dublar Char points of the Sundarbans at about 10:45am.
The joint team also called in helicopters to help them rescue the fishermen and arrest the abductors till filing of this report at about 12:10 pm.
Thirty-six fishermen were kidnapped by forest robbers near Fairway Buoy of the Bay in Sharankhola upazila early Friday.
The armed gang also took away three trawlers and looted valuables worth about Tk 12 lakh.
Five fishermen were injured during the attack.
A gang of 15/20 members of notorious 'Mortoza Bahini' attacked over 100 fishermen when they were catching hilsha in 10 trawlers.
Before leaving the spot, the gang kidnapped 36 fishermen along with three trawlers and demanded a ransom of Tk 50,000 for the release of each captive.
They threatened to kill the fishermen if their demand was not met within a week.
