Sparrso to monitor water logging

Bangladesh Space Research and Remote Sensing Organization (Sparrso), a government body, will establish a monitoring system to detect water logging, using remote sensing and geographic information system. The system will monitor areas in the country, which are prone to water logging and update stakeholders on time, said SM Humayun Kabir, a senior scientific officer of Sparrso. He was addressing a seminar arranged by the organisation titled 'Application of Satellite Technology in Monitoring Water logging in Bangladesh' held in the auditorium of Sparrso yesterday. Work on the system started last year and it is expected to be completed by 2013, Kabir said. The countrywide monitoring system has been prepared based on the result of a pilot study carried out on the waterlogged Bhutiar Beel. The problem of water logging at Bhutiar Beel, in Tarakhada Upazila in Khulna, drew Sparrso's attention in 2008 and they researched on the problem based on primary analysis of satellite data and other information. The study started in 2009 and was completed last year, said AZM Zahedul Islam, principal scientific officer of Sparrso. The objective of the study was to find out a sustainable solution to the water logging of Bhutiar Beel, Zahedul said. Following the study, Sparrso recommended observing the area where the Modhumati and Atai rivers meet, as it is at a lower level than the bottom of the beel, he added. For around five decades water logging has been a serious problem in the country, he added.
