A Jubo League leader yesterday filed a defamation case against ATN Bangla Chairman Mahfuzur Rahman for making “derogatory remarks” about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Metropolitan Magistrate Md Erfanullah took cognizance of the case and fixed today for passing an order on the issue. Emdadul Haque Emdad, a leader of Dhaka City unit of Jubo League, filed the case with Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court in the capital against Mahfuzur Rahman around 11:00am. The complainant also appealed to the court to issue an arrest warrant against Mahfuzur for making the “disgraceful comments” against the PM. Mahfuzur's remarks about the PM have damaged the image of the government and caused a storm of protest among many people at home and abroad, said the plaintiff. He stated that Mahfuzur during a programme in London termed the PM "talkative" and it was reported by a private television channel on June 25. Mahfuzur made the comments on the same occasion when he remarked that journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi were victims of an "extramarital affair", he said. He added that as a politically conscious citizen, he felt the remarks were tantamount to sedition and therefore punishable.
